Cougars Dominate GCAA Soccer with another state championship

Cougars Dominate GCAA Soccer with another state championship

Congratulations to the varsity girls’ soccer team for capturing their fourth consecutive GCAA State Soccer Championship. The lady Cougars defeated King’s Way 2-0 in a battle where the score did not tell the whole story. The Cougars led by senior and match MVP Tylie Wesley dominated possession throughout the match. The senior center midfielders, Margo Watson and Tylie Wesley controlled the game with strong passing and good ball movement. King’s Way packed in the box only allowing eight shots on goal while giving up ten corners.

The First Cougar goal came from a well-placed header by Tylie Wesley in the 18th minute off a corner kick from junior Paige Williams. The second goal followed in the 23rd minute off a one-touch finish from season scoring leader Paige Williams off an assist by junior Carrie Tewes.

The defense, led by senior central defender Kaytlin Rygh, played with tenacity only requiring keeper Bethany Winston to make one save during the entire match.

Congratulations Cougars!

Seniors: Tylie Wesley, Margo Watson, Kaitlyn Rygh, Julia Smith and Emily Townsend

Juniors: Paige Williams, Tianna Francis, Carrie Tewes and manager Emily Fulbright

Sophomores: Katie Graff, Grace Stalinescu

Freshmen: Rachel Francis, Diana Rousch, Anna Aldridge and manager Jessica Waite

Quiz Bowl Team's Final Match

Quiz Bowl Team's Final Match

The Junior Varsity and Middle School KHCS Quiz Bowl Teams competed in the final tournament of the year on Saturday, April 28, at Collins Hill HS in Suwanee.

The tournament pitted JV teams (which must be 10th grade and younger) from 12 schools, including Brookwood, Berkmar, Marist, Central Macon, etc. The Cougar teams competed very well against the teams from much larger schools, with the JV team defeating teams from Collins Hill, Newnan, and Northgate HS, and suffering narrow defeats to Berkmar and Buford high schools. The JV team was captained by Morgan Mullings, and included top scorer Spencer Mitchell, Jason McLean, Estera Maxim, and Tara Thomas.

The Middle School team from Killian Hill also competed very well - considering the team was mostly 6th graders competing against 9th and 10th graders. The team played competitively against most of their opponents, and even led the Brookwood team early in the match. The Middle School team was captained by Courtland Ellis, and included top scorer Justin Orr, Ethan Mok and Parth Purani.

Senior Trip to Spain

Senior Trip to Spain

"The students made this trip for me," Mr. Totten says. "Their testimony for the Lord shone everywhere we went!" Mrs. Wall echoed. Arriving in Barcelona, the group met up with Joshua Expedition's tour guide and did some local shopping and sight-seeing. The Barcelona Cathedral was next along with a visit to the Fort at Montijuic, Parque Guell and the amazing Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

The seniors, when asked to share their most memorable experiences, the Sagrada Familia Cathedral was at the top of the list. Its ornate architecture inside and out was breathtaking. Also, making high marks was a visit to the mountaintop castle overlooking the city of Barcelona. There the students split up to pray for the city for ten solid minutes.

After Barcelona they boarded a train for the capital, Madrid. The group toured Madrid on foot hitting the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de Espana-all before lunch that day! After lunch they met up with a local Christian missionary couple. Seeing their ministry, senior, Almaz Semere felt drawn to go back to help them. "I will always remember them and actually want to come back to volunteer at some point in my life."

The evening's events included visiting Reina Sofia museum, home to Picasso's famous painting, Guernica, as well as dinner and shopping. That night in Madrid, there was a demonstration with protestors parading the streets...that was an eye-opening, unexpected experience that boosted the seniors' appreciation for their country.

Sandwiched in between their initial visit to Madrid and the group's departing stop in the capital city, was a tour of Toledo. Toledo has great art, medieval streets, and plenty of souvenirs. Seeing how swords are made at The Sword Shop was a highlight there.

Many seniors noted the spiritual darkness of Spain. Julia Smith saw that, "Although there are cathedrals everywhere, God is not a part of their lives." Back in Madrid on their last night, the group ate dinner at a little restaurant. There was a keyboard musician playing. Mrs. Wall, knowing the language, asked if the group could sing along with him. She then volunteered Mr. Totten to come to the microphone and lead! Hesitantly seizing the opportunity, he asked if the musician knew, "Amazing Grace." He did, and there in that little Madrid restaurant, for everyone to hear, was the Gospel, sung clearly, joined by Mrs. Wall and then by all the seniors. The people in the restaurant applauded when they finished. What an opportunity to be a channel of God's grace to the people of Spain!

History, culture, religion, art, architecture, politics, geography, friendship and ministry - all aspects of this year's amazing trip to Spain. Sponsors, Mr. Totten, Mrs. Wall, Mr. Wallace as well as Mr. and Mrs. Williams accompanied the class of 2012. Senior, Rachel Jones speaks for her class when she says: "We all grew together as a class. I grew as a person and as a Christian. This trip really impacted my life."

Technology and School Improvement Initiatives

Technology and School Improvement Initiatives

As we plan for the 2012-13 school term, the faculty and administration are working hard to continue to improve the quality of Christian education at KHCS. The administration has established ...a school improvement team to look at ways to improve the program at KHCS. This team is made up of eight teachers, three administrators, two support staff and four parents. The selected student learning goals we will focus on for the near future are; improved Christian world view, improved critical thinking skills, improved collaborative skills and improved discovery/investigation skills. This school improvement effort will involve clearly identified goals and the staff training to reach those goals.

As a part of the overall school improvement initiative will be the use of iPads in selected Advanced Placement courses in European History and Physics. KHCS already has a portable laptop cart with 36 laptops as well as 12 laptops for checkout from the office. Certain elementary classes have a small number of laptops for use in their individual rooms. All teachers have interactive white boards available to them as well as other technology tools in the classroom. This summer KH will be beefing up the infrastructure for internet access by bringing a fiber-optic line up to the buildings from the street to pair up with our existing fiber-optic cabling within the buildings. We will also be enhancing the wireless access points within the building to strengthen the future opportunities for internet access for our students.

I am excited about the opportunity God has given us to serve Him and your students. Thank you for the opportunity to train the whole child.

Can you run a marathon? The 4th and 5th graders have the chance to do just that! Running 1 ¼ miles each week, over eleven weeks every child who participates in the Running Club will have completed a marathon! That's quite an accomplishment!

Sponsored by the Atlanta Track Club, funded by private donors, and organizational partners, the cost to participate is free, plus anyone who completes the program will receive free entrance to the Atlanta Kids Run.

Coordinating the program for KHCS is Krista Griffin (Lunchroom Coordinator) and Bec Marks (2nd Grade Teacher). About 30 students in 4th and 5th grades have been meeting on the soccer field Tuesday and Thursday after school to do an exercise activity and stretches. Then they begin their mile run.

The program launched in 2007 with one location serving 38 kids. Today, Kilometer Kids impacts more than 3,000 kids in at-risk communities throughout the Atlanta region and beyond. Kilometer Kids inspires youth to achieve health and fitness through a fun and supportive running program, empowering children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyle choices.
Quiz Teams All Medal

Quiz Teams All Medal

The KHCS Quiz Bowl team braved some rough weather on Saturday, March 3rd to participate in a tournament at Prince Avenue Christian School. After five rounds of play, the three Cougars teams each came away with a trophy in their respective divisions. Killian Hill was the only school among the four who competed (KHCS, Providence, Hebron, and Prince Avenue) to finish in the top three in the Varsity, JV and Middle School divisions

The Varsity team managed to defeat the two teams representing Providence Christian Academy to finish in third place, behind Hebron and the host Prince Avenue (who finished first). The Varsity team includes seniors Adam Maeland, Apeksha Reddy, and Emily Townsend. The Varsity team has improved, with the third place finish marking their best result all year. The team played all year with only three players, in a format that allows teams to play up to five players at once, but have been competitive all year, and were rewarded for their hard work with a trophy at the end of their season.

The JV team earned second place, defeating Providence in the semi-finals of the tournament, before falling to Hebron in the finals. The JV team is made up of Spencer Mitchell, Morgan Mullings, Estera Maxim, and Tara Thomas. This is the third tournament at which the JV Cougars have won a trophy, with their best finish coming at the Cougar Classic, where they were the overall victors.

The Middle School team from Killian Hill also finished in second place. The team competed in a division with eight teams (some schools have more than one team), and lost only to the Prince Avenue A team. The Middle School team of Courtland Ellis, Ethan Mok, Justin Orr and Peyton Holzworth defeated teams from Providence and Hebron to earn a rematch against their rivals this year, Prince Avenue. Having beaten Prince Avenue at their most recent contest in January, the Middle School team knew that Prince Avenue was a formidable opponent. The schools faced off in the finals, and KHCS built an early lead before Prince Avenue went on a run that put them ahead.

Quiz Team coach John Allan said, "All the teams from KHCS have shown great improvement throughout the year, and I am very proud of how each team has grown in skill, and honored God this year".

Instrumental Inspiration

The Concert Band director at Bob Jones University, Dr. Cox, asked if he could bring his group to “provide some instrumental inspiration” to our students! Of course, KHCS Band teacher Mrs. Hulin didn’t want to miss that opportunity!

So, the 4th-8th grades gathered on Wednesday, Feb. 29th in the gym to hear the Bob Jones University Concert Band play. About fifty college students played ten different selections including the Theme from Gettysburg, several marches and a masquerade number. In addition to the whole group, specific instruments played separately to demo what their instrument sounded like by itself, giving the students the chance to hear and see how that specific instrument is played.

After the hour long concert and demos everyone agreed the experience was definitely “inspirational”!

Mr. Alan Boley — Revolutionary War Soldier

On Thursday, January 19, 2012 the Fourth Grade classes were transported back to the late 1770’s and experienced life as a Revolutionary War soldier through the presentation of Mr. Alan Boley. Complete in authentic garb, Mr. Boley highlighted items like the canteen, bayonet, musket, and the basic tools every soldier needed to have to be prepared to fight. After the initial presentation in the classroom, the students went outside to be lined up in ranks of Company A and Company B. After learning to line up, interpret and follow military orders, Mr. Boley showed them how the musket is fired. Actually... Mr. Boley FIRED the musket. Filled with black powder, but no ball…in a cloud of smoke, the musket BOOMED across the athletic field. “Awesome!” was one 4th grader’s reaction. “That’s cool!” said another, and “Whoa…man!” The demonstration from start to finish brought to life the reality of what it was like for those men who risked it all to make America the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Alumni Perspective

Alumni Perspective

Making the transition from high school to college can be both exciting and challenging. Every year KHCS solicits feedback from our recent graduates about their initial college experience and how KHCS has prepared them for what they have encountered. Typically, about 60% of the graduates respond each year, and their input is very valuable and appreciated.

The class of 2011 responded this year once again overwhelmingly positive with a few constructive suggestions on how KHCS can improve its offerings to equip its graduates better in their future studies. Even though there are many variables that go into answering the survey questions, there is a pattern that emerges that is so helpful in determining which areas KHCS excels and, which can be improved.

KHCS seeks to prepare its students for college in the following ways:

Mastery in specific core subjects like math, science, English

Thinking and reasoning skills

Time management

Reading volume

Writing assignments

Different types of testing and work assignments

When asked how they felt they compared to their college classmates:

50% --- Consistently Above Average

33% --- Occasionally Above Average

16% --- Adequate

8% --- Somewhat Inadequate

0% --- Very Inadequate

English was listed as the favorite class because the teacher made the content interesting and applicable. Math was listed as the least favorite because the students did not feel they were "very good at it".

When asked how KHCS could improve or expand its academic opportunities, more diverse Advanced Placement offerings were recommended multiple times. The current AP classes were given high ratings and were seen as very beneficial. More foreign language offerings, a philosophy class, as well as adding more science choices like AP Chemistry and anatomy were also suggested.

Overall KHCS is seen through the eyes of recent alumni as a well-rounded, whole education that touches on the deeper issues, teaches discernment and prepares its students for the next chapter in their lives.
